Yes, Yes and YES!!

Congratulations to our next Mayor, Joe Mosca, and to new council members Josh Moran and Nancy Walsh. The good people of Sierra Madre have spoken, and I think what they've said is: Enough is Enough!

This was an exciting election. There is no doubt who the majority of the citizens of Sierra Madre want to run this wonderful and beautiful city. This election proved that fear tactics and character assassinations will not get you elected in Sierra Madre. Sierra Madreans want people who are honest, stick to the facts, and treat people with decency.

Get behind the new city council. If you want individuals to fail, you want Sierra Madre to fail. Provide hope and support.

When is MacGillvray's last day as mayor? I want to see her reign end now!

  3. Wait -- are we seriously claiming that one side used scare tactics and character assasinations and the other didn't? That is truly false. The election is over, and I will support the new council. But, the Mountain Views News blatant attacks on Crawford and Macgillvray during the election amount to nothing less than character assasinations. And, scare tactics? Hhmmm. . .maybe claims that one side wanted to do away with the SMFD and SMPD if elected, which is totally false.

Let's be honest. This was a nasty election and the three who won did so because of character assasinations and scare tactics, not in spite of them.

    Anonymous at 9:04,

Have you read the Sierra Madre Tattler? The campaigning from that candidate's mouth was nothing but fear and character assassination of the 3 he did not like. He has been writing that propaganda for years. The current council members in their literature and on their websites did not use the tactics of Crawford.

I do notice that Crawford did eliminate the comments sections on every post on his blog. He was very smart in doing so.

  5. I have a smile on my face. I think its time to start blogging again! Now with a great council, and some postive politics. Thanks for all your editorials and opinions.

  6. Lifelong Canyonite,

Yes, I have read the tattler. My point was not that Crawford didn't use certain tactics, but that the other candidates did as well, vis-a-vis other third-party sources like the Mountain Views News. What's worse, having a candidate himself, via a blog or otherwise, express certain opinions and tactics or having others do the work for you? I think the latter because it's less transparent.

I think the point, though, is that hopefully these tactics, on both sides and in the city generally, will stop! We need civility, and I hope these candidates bring that, if nothing else.

  7. This is great news the big windbag blowhard is finished!!! Thank God.....

  8. I've gotta hand it to Crawford: it takes a special kind of talent to shoot yourself in the foot while it's in your mouth.

And as a special election bonus, a certain cacophonous echo chamber has been closed down as well. Let's hope it stays that way.

  9. I woke up, checked the results, and am relieved.

I hope the nasty exchanges spear-headed by the current mayor can finally come to an end.

I agree completely with this statement.

  17. Extremely dissapointedApril 14, 2010 at 6:49 PM

Christ Almighty John! I voted for you with great expectations, never imagining you would get your clock cleaned, but you did. But what I didn't expect was for you to hide your head in the sand, literally shut down your blog, so not even your supporters, including myself, could offer a conciliatory word of encouragement. I now think I voted for the wrong man, extremely dissapointed John, extremely dissapointed. Only two years for redemption.

  18. It's funny that when the council was on the "other side" none of the "backstabbing, lying and self-serving" ever happened! While I didn't vote for the new council members; I will support them. I find that there is no person left "untouched" in this last campaign. Everyone that had an opportunity to showcase just our "candidates" and what they stood for, bowed down and gave us their "own" opinion. Sorry, Mr. Coburn, I don't care what your opinion is, what matters is what the candidates stand for. Not ONE of the media could do that. Not totally unexpected but certainly disappointing.

    ReplyDelete
  19. So you don't care what the opinion of Mr. Coburn is, nor the Pasadena Star News, nor the vast majority of Sierra Madreans.
    Well, good for you.
And we don't care what your opinion is, so we're even.
Now go home, put on your tinfoil hat.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Tinfoil hat? Really? Amazing....I was pointing out the obvious...that no one was left unbiased. In the media you would expect an unbiased opinion somewhere...but I guess that doesn't exist anymore...but then again, you are the same ones that denounced Crawford for that. The mirror provides a true reflection. Take a look.

  21. Has anyone checked on Old Kentucky? Is she OK?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I miss the days when candidates ran individually and were judged on what they said they were going to do, not what their opinions of their opponents were. I don't recall when council members started running as part of a "slate" and we had only 2 choices.
That said, I believe this election was a referendum on our Mayor, and her recent actions may very well have had a big impact on her "team" losing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sierra Madreans spoke loud and clear that the Mayor and Crawford turned them off. In addition, every single local paper and Mr. Coburn's site endorsed Mosca, Moran and Walsh. There is some media bias, but it is interesting that the same three folks received unanimous endorsements. How often does that happen?

Anyway, we want folks on the city council with a "can do" attitude. Folks that can only work with those with the same beliefs need not apply.

Sierra Madre is now in good hands!

91024--I hope that you revive your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  24. In this mornings Pasadena Star News, the editorial praised Sierra Madre voters for removing the troublemakers from control.
Also, in the article on the elections, Don Watts is quoted as saying that the new council will be "pro-development". Really, Don. What is wrong with well managed development? Should all of our downtown look like that haunted house that is currently across the street from City Hall? Is this what you want? Well, I don't. How about a beautifully designed building with lovely landscaping? Maybe that building could be home to retail shops or more senior housing. What is there now is what is considered "blight" and is the sign of a town that has no plan and no vision.
Mr. Watts is the guy who built that hideous monster on the south side of East Montecito, and he's the same guy that not that long ago was on the payroll of Maranatha High School who employed him to design a massive school on land that was zoned for homes.
He's hardly the role-model for sane and appealing development.
This whole "pro-development" cry is a myth.
It's a sound-byte used to lure the uninformed and frighten those who live on the edge of paranoia. It is a tactic that has been used effectively from the beginning of time and used to harness the gullible and shallow.
It's a sound-byte, no different than the Sarah Palin "death panels" or the George Bush "you're either with us or against us" baloney.
We don't like baloney here. It smells, and gawd only knows what it's made of.

  25. Bill, I am of the opinion that your editorials were fair. You stuck to specific issues. I'm especially appreciative that you recognized the worth of Pat Alcorn, whom I hold in high regard. She is a person who might have made a good city council member, and I would have voted for her had she not been on a "slate" with John Crawford.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 7:35 is right about the “pro-development” myth. Years of angry, divisive and juvenile comments aimed at fellow citizens based on a myth. How very, very sad.

I am really looking forward to a return to civility both on the dais and in the audience. Maybe even that other blog will get better. One can only hope.

  27. Anonymous from 8:05 PM. "Everyone that had an opportunity to showcase just our "candidates" and what they stood for, bowed down and gave us their "own" opinion." You apparently didn't read things all the way through. Mr. Coburn gave us his opinion in his editorial, but he also listed where the candidates stood on such issues as outsourcing our Police Department and Fire Department, development of the city and bringing revenue to the city. At least he did it for the candidates that told him where they stood. Some candidates were very vague on where they stood on the issues. The right candidates pervailed.

  28. As I recall, there were 7 individuals running for city council and you had three votes. No one said you had to vote for a "slate". To vote for a slate meant you only had a choice of two votes. One for the "slate" of Mosca, Walch, and Moran and the other for Crawford, Watts and Alcorn. Too bad voters were lemmings and voted for a "slate" and didn't consider the worth of each individual candidate.

  29. "Eagle" John Crawford is showing his true colors now. He is not for the good of Sierra Madre in any way. His hatred of those who disagree with him has consumed him. His opinions and views are pointless, lack evidence and facts, and are falling on deaf ears. To him, the sky is falling. The wolf is coming! The wolf is coming!

He clearly does not know how to lose graciously. He is an angry individual. It is too bad that he promotes such negativity in this world.

The people of Sierra Madre do not want or care for you opinions, "Eagle" John Crawford. Get over yourself! You do not write news. You write an online diary of your opinions, and your opinions are like dog feces; they stink. Your candidacy was a small blip on the radar screen of life. In 6 months, no one, except your lunatic followers, will remember you.

  30. In response to the post from 12:52PM on the 17th:

I think they did consider the worth of the candidates. It just so happens that the three that got the most votes appeared to be a "slate".
The three of "worth", as you put it, will be seated on the 27th...

  31. Anonymous at 2:58, you're pushing things. It's possible to say his opinions stink without including dog feces in the description. It's possible to make your point without calling his followers lunatics. Some may be, but I don't think we are in a position to say that, I know I don't have a psyche degree. I'm leaving your post up, for now. But please recognize that I don't intend to let this blog become negative and full of personal attacks. There are other places you can go if that's your style. If it continues in that direction, I'll start deleting. As long as we're on the subject, anonymous at 7:16, the tin foil hat comment rubbed me the wrong way, too. I don't want to have to babysit this thing, so I'm hoping that the people who contribute will do so in a respectful manner, even if you find it difficult. Oh, and 2:58 - Eagle is Bill Tice's nickname, not Crawford's.

Anonymous at 6:59 - I offered all candidates the opportunity to put their campaign material on my site, and most took me up on it. I also asked them a series of questions that they were all given, and most of them took me up on it. Neither of those opportunities involved my opinion in any way. As to my editorials and endorsements, if you don't want my opinion, don't read it. I'm not the first person to editorialize, it's a practice that's been going on for a few hundred years. That's the nice thing about having my own website, I get to state my opinion, when I want, about whatever I want. I think John Crawford would probably defend my right to do so. And whether you want it or not, there are plenty of people out there who are interested, for whatever reason. So like I said, you don't want my opinion, don't read it. Your option.

  32. Bill,
I apologize for dropping down the level of the other blog. I should not have done that, and I will not do it again I will take away the offensive parts and re-post, so you can delete the original. I do appreciate your hard work. Your site does contain actual facts and news. When we have flag alerts, you are often ahead of the city site, which is very helpful to everyone in the canyon.

There is one subject that did not seem to be brought up during the election, but it is very crucial to the city. What is the update regarding the emergency radio station? For those of us in the canyon, this is a necessary tool to keep us informed on many different subjects in times of fire and mudslides. What can someone like myself do to make sure it gets in place?

  34. The key to anyone who is going to run for office in two years is going to be how not to have any association with Mr. Crawford.
If MacGillivary tries to run again in 2012, it will be an anchor on her campaign that will drag her to defeat. She has enough baggage of her own regarding mean and uncivil behavior to not need any help getting tossed.
But, her praise of Crawford's website as being a source for accurate information will forever
be her permanent link to Crawford's tirades.
I hope someone has saved her "letter to the community" so it's quotes can be used in two years.
Oh, what a tangled web we weave.

Mr. Crawford needs to do a lot of volunteer work in town instead of cowering behind his keyboard. He might actually enjoy himself, get something positive done and meet the real heros and the keepers of our community.
I'm not going to hold my breathe for that to happen. I, and many others will carry on doing the work for people like him and all the others who use their energy complaining.
For our hard work at the Art Fair, Wisteria Festival, Trail Race, Commission meetings, Chamber of Commerce functions, Rose Float, Fire Department, the 4th of July Parade and the Candlelight Walk, we will rewarded by being called names on his website and ridiculed for our efforts.
Mr. Crawford...you want to maintain our wonderful town? Join us...all is forgiven.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's customary for all who were candidates to be at the council meeting when the switch of council members takes place.
I think that Candidate Crawford, as strong as his convictions are, will take advantage of the opportunity to be there that night and be recognized for his participation in the election process.
I can't imagine how much work that must go into a campaign, so, win or lose, he and the others should be thanked for the efforts.

  36. I'm back in town after a week back east. What a week to be gone! Of course, I mailed in my absentee ballot before flying out of town, and appreciate the City of Sierra Madre, sierramadrenews.net, and other local media, for enabling me to stay in touch with this pivotal election on line. I really regret missing the joy of celebrating the outcome with the like-minded majority!
I’m very proud of the dignified campaigns that the victors ran. Sierra Madre voters went to the polls like the human immune system attacking bacteria, viruses, and other parasites. They aggresively and decisively tossed the invading Contrarians out with the trash. I wouldn’t call the wide margin of the final numbers a “landslide,” but the results were, in every sense, a mudslide. We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief and get back to being the treasure that is Sierra Madre.
